Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
